Superhero

The year 2024 promises to be rich in superhero movies, with releases catering to all tastes. Following the mixed success of Sony’s “Madame Web,”  here are five films that are set to captivate us:

1. The Crow

On June 7, 2024, a unique anti-hero will soar once again onto screens: The Crow. This iconic character, born from the imagination of James O’Barr, returns in a remake of the cult 1994 film, originally starring Brandon Lee.

This new adaptation will be directed by Rupert Sanders (“Snow White and the Huntsman,” “Ghost in the Shell”) and will feature Bill Skarsgård (“It,” “John Wick: Chapter 4”) in the role of Eric Draven.

The story remains the same: Eric Draven and his fiancée Shelly Webster are murdered by a gang of criminals. A year later, a crow resurrects Eric to seek vengeance. However, this time the film is set in a different city, and the plot has been slightly modified to appeal to modern audiences.

Filming began in June 2023 and took place in Detroit and Budapest. The trailer was unveiled in December 2023 and received a positive reception from fans.

The remake of “The Crow” is an ambitious project that has undergone a long and challenging development. Many actors were considered for the role of Eric Draven, including Bradley Cooper, James McAvoy, and Tom Hiddleston. It wasn’t until 2023 that Bill Skarsgård was chosen.

Fans of the original film eagerly anticipate what this new “Crow” has to offer. Bill Skarsgård is a talented actor who has already proven his ability to embody complex and dark characters. Director Rupert Sanders also has a solid pedigree, and he seems to have the vision needed to bring “The Crow’s” dark and gothic universe to life.

Mark your calendars for June 7, 2024, to discover this new chapter in the legend of The Crow

2. Kraven The Hunter

On August 30, 2024, a new ferocious face will carve out a place in Sony’s cinematic universe, populated by superheroes and villains. Kraven the Hunter, portrayed by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, will hit screens despite mixed expectations following the controversial releases of Morbius, Madame Web, and the two Venom films.

This new adaptation deviates significantly from the classic Kraven. The British actor describes his character as a “protector of the natural world” and an “animal enthusiast,” a surprising direction for Marvel’s most notorious hunter. Naturally, this raises concerns among fans who fear that Sony may repeat its past mistakes by turning an iconic villain into a smoother hero.

Despite the controversy, the film boasts a solid cast including Taylor-Johnson, Russell Crowe, Ariana DeBose, and many others. Kraven will not be alone as he will be joined by other enemies of Spider-Man: The Foreigner, Rhino, and The Chameleon.

Originally scheduled for October 2023, Kraven the Hunter experienced significant delays, raising hopes for notable improvements before its final release on August 30, 2024.

3. Venom: The Last Dance

While the first Venom with Tom Hardy divided critics, and its sequel also failed to impress unanimously, the announcement of “Venom: The Last Dance” still manages to arouse fans’ curiosity. Set for October 25, 2024, this third installment could well conclude Eddie Brock’s and his extraterrestrial symbiote’s journey.

The film’s plot remains shrouded in mystery, but set photos showed Tom Hardy sporting the same costume as in the post-credits scene of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” after his brief multiversal journey in the MCU.

In terms of casting, newcomers join Tom Hardy: Juno Temple, Clarke Backo, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. The latter is rumored to portray the film’s villain, Orwell Taylor, leader of a group called The Jury, pursuing Brock and Venom.

A glimmer of hope remains among some fans who still dream of connections with Spider-Man and an appearance by Peter Parker, portrayed by Tom Holland or Andrew Garfield. However, the chances of seeing either seem slim.

4. Joker: Folie à Deux

Get ready to dive back into madness in 2024! In 2019, DC Comics made a splash with “Joker,” an unprecedented take on Batman’s famous foe, portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix and directed by Todd Phillips, the man behind the “Hangover” trilogy. Building on this resounding success, the duo is set to set theaters ablaze again with “Joker: Folie à Deux.”

This sequel will mark a radical departure from the original film. Goodbye Gotham City and its dark atmosphere, “Folie à Deux” will transport us into the walls of Arkham Asylum, the famous psychiatric hospital, and will turn into a musical comedy! For this new chapter, Arthur Fleck, portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, will not be alone in his madness. Lady Gaga joins the cast to lend her features to Harley Quinn, the iconic lover of the Joker.

With such a duo on screen, the film promises to be exceptional. Joaquin Phoenix won the Oscar for Best Actor in 2019 for his performance in “Joker,” while Lady Gaga was nominated for Best Actress the previous year for “A Star Is Born.”

Mark your calendars for October 4, 2024, to discover “Joker: Folie à Deux” and dive into this spiral of musical madness!

5. Deadpool & Wolverine

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has dominated superhero culture for over a decade. So, when Marvel Studios offers only one film per year, you can bet it will be one of the most anticipated of the year. The hype only intensifies when the film in question is “Deadpool & Wolverine,” the sequel to two extremely popular superhero films.

Ryan Reynolds not only reprises the lead role, infusing once again his classic humor and wit into Wade Wilson, but Hugh Jackman also makes his grand return as Wolverine. The mutant duo embarks on a multiverse adventure where they will cross paths with Loki’s TVA and more familiar faces from the Marvel universe.

Beyond its star-studded cast and the promise of exciting cameos, “Deadpool & Wolverine” generates much excitement among die-hard MCU fans. This third installment will have significant implications for the ongoing multiverse saga, as it lays the groundwork for the next two Avengers blockbusters, including “Secret Wars.”

Get ready for a massive dose of action and cutting-edge humor: “Deadpool & Wolverine” hits theaters on July 26, 2024.
